One of the best ways for dogs to socialize together is to go on "buddy walks". Walking together allows dogs to cooperate on "the hunt" and mimics how their wild ancestors worked together. It's a natural way for shy, fearful, and even reactive dogs to get time with other dogs in a constructive way.
Walking together is good for people, too! One of the main benefits of a dog park, as many of you know, is that it builds bonds within the human community. Until we get a dog park, we can build our community in other ways, such as social and educational events.
In summary: walking with your dog and other people and their dogs is fun! We're planning on doing regular group walks, starting Saturday, April 11 at 2pm. For the first month, we're going to try out Meetup.com for managing these walks (in order to broaden our exposure a bit). You can sign up here: http://www.meetup.com/maydog/
Meetup.com charges an annual fee to use their service, so we're asking for a $5 donation per family per walk. All full members of MayDOG can walk for free.
Happy walking,
Lisa
