MayDOG president Lisa Lines and member Veronica Zolina presented a set of pet-sized oxygen masks to Chief Stephen Kulik of the Maynard Fire Department today. Although the Department already had one set of pet masks on its ambulance, this additional set will ensure that the engine company is also equipped to help dogs, cats, and other pets pulled from a burning building. We are always happy and grateful for any and all additional donations, as you never know when you will need them, said Chief Kulik, who accepted the donation. The set contains three masks of different sizes, which can fit animals from a Saint Bernard down to a kitten. Zolina and her husband own two greyhounds and a cat. She decided to donate the masks on behalf of MayDOG because of that groups efforts to promote Maynard as a dog-friendly community. She said, I want to be sure that all of Maynards pets, including my own, can receive lifesaving treatment in a fire if they need it. It was reassuring to learn that the Department is prepared to aid animals as well as people, because so many Maynard residents are pet owners too. More than 40,000 pets across the country perished in fires in 2006, with the majority dying from smoke inhalation, said Lines. We hope that giving these masks to the Maynard Fire Department will raise awareness of the importance of emergency preparedness for rescue agencies and pet owners alike, she said. Next Sunday, August 16th, from 7:30-11am, the American Legion on Summer Street in Maynard will host a fundraiser breakfast. All proceeds from the breakfast will be donated to Canines for Combat Vets, a non-profit organization that trains service dogs to assist combat wounded veterans. Breakfast is $5.00 for the Legion Breakfast, and $6.00 for the Hungry Man. Juice and coffee are included. Childrens' plates are half price. Diners can get $1.00 off of breakfast if they bring a toy or treat to send to service K-9s currently stationed overseas. There was a three-way tie between Aubuchon Hardware, at 33 Main Street, Eriksons Ice Cream, at 12 Great Road, and the Maynard Barber Shop, at 75 Main Street, all in Maynard. Six other nominees were also recognized, including LOOK Optical, Ray & Sons Cycle & Ski, and Middlesex Savings Bank in Maynard, and Sweet Bites Café, Sawyer Automotive, and Ace Hardware in Acton. We want to promote our local businesses, and we believe that one of the easiest things they can do to gain attention and goodwill is by being friendly to our furry family members, said Lisa Lines, president of the group. She then described the reasons for each business being nominated. All of the nominees were recognized for their dog-friendly business practices, such as providing a water bowl, giving out dog treats, and allowing customers dogs inside. In the case of Eriksons, their free doggie ice cream draws dog owners from around the area. Bob at the Maynard Barber Shop is known for giving out dog biscuits and having a water bowl for dogs. And Aubuchon Hardware sees up to 40 dog visitors a week, whose owners bring them in for belly rubs and cookies. Ask any dog owner: they love to take their dogs with them when they are out and about, said Alex Landsman, the MayDOG member who announced the winners. Here in Maynard, many people come downtown on foot with their dogs. On these hot summer days, dog owners really appreciate a business that allows dogs inside or puts a water bowl out in front and provides a place for the dog to be safely secured while the owner is inside. MayDOG members who spoke at the event offered several reasons for businesses to be friendly to Fido. In this economy, anything a business can do to set itself apart from the competition is a good thing, and while dogs themselves dont shop much, their owners do, said Landsman. Dog owners are very loyal to businesses that cater to their needs and the needs of their dogs. Hi all, Have you been thinking about calling in a dog trainer for some private instruction? You have lots of options, but two local trainers in particular are worth your consideration. First, if you're a MayDOG member, you can get a discount on your first consultation with <a href="http://pawspetsitter.com/Training/Training.htm">P.A.W.S.</a>, a Friend of MayDOG. And now, new trainer Tumeria Langlois (<a href="http://www.siriusdawg.com/">Sirius Dawg Training</a>) is offering to donate 10% of the cost of any training package to MayDOG when you mention this email (you do not need to be a dues-paying member for this). So if you're planning on getting some expert assistance with your dog, please check out our two local MayDOG partners for your training needs! ~~~ With the news that the town has put the plans for a solar installation on hold, I'm planning on requesting another hearing before the board in August or September. This time, it will be important to have as many supporters present as possible. Board meetings are always held on Tuesdays at 7. I will give as much advance notice of the date as I can so that people can plan to attend. One thing to keep in mind is that even if they do install a solar farm, it's not likely to take up more than 3-4 acres. The largest "brightfield" in the country, at 3.7 acres, is located in Brockton, MA, on a former industrial site that is capped (similar to our landfill site). <a href="http://www.brockton.ma.us/docs/BrightfieldBrochure.pdf">Here is a brochure that describes that installation.</a> It would be great to do something similar in Maynard! The site is certainly large enough to accommodate a brightfield like the one in Brockton along with a recreational trail and a fenced dog park... ~~~ Tomorrow night, the walking group will be meeting down at the Rockland Ave soccer field and walking through the woods along the conservation land trails. These "pack walks" are really fun and a great way to socialize and get some exercise. Hope you can join us. (If you come, please be sure to wear bug spray - and I recommend that all dogs be up to date on their Lyme vaccines and/or flea and tick medications!) ~~~ It's not too late to nominate your preferred local business for our Dog-Friendly Maynard award! Our favorite member of the Board of Selectmen, Sally Bubier, will be announcing the winner in a brief ceremony next Saturday, August 1, at noon at the Farmers' Market. We'll also be recognizing all the nominees. Nominations will be accepted through July 31, 2009, and the winner will be announced on August 1, 2009. UPDATE ON DOG PARK DISCUSSIONS WITH TOWN Town officials are still working on the solar farm proposal and are not willing to revisit our proposal until they know better what is going to happen with the solar farm. Apparently, the vendor is suggesting things like re-grading and making other changes to the site to accomodate the solar panels. It sounds like it will be another 3 months before anything is known for sure. In the meantime, we've scheduled a visit to the landfill site on Sunday, July 12, at 7pm as part of the MayDOG walking group's 7th walk. [MayDOG News] Workshop report; need one more volunteer for Saturday

Our May 3 dog behavior workshop went very well! I've posted a video from the workshop on our site: <a href="http://maydog.org/2009/05/understanding-dog-behavior/">http://maydog.org/2009/05/understanding-dog-behavior/</a> The video shows two of the trainers demonstrating a gradual introduction of two dogs who sometimes have trouble greeting other dogs nicely on leash. At around the 2 minute mark, the two try to meet but get into a mild disagreement. The remainder is a demonstration of teaching "look at that" and gradually bringing the two dogs closer and closer. Lots of clicking and treating going on! ~~~~~ We are looking for one more volunteer/family to help out at the MayDOG table this coming Saturday, from 2-4pm, at the Pet Fair Extravaganza in Waltham (close to Costco and the Home Depot - see here for map: <a href="http://www.maydog.org/park/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=7">http://www.maydog.org/park/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=7</a>). If you like, you can also bring your dog(s) with you! The fair will include free pet first aid classes, live music and obedience demos, free popcorn, lots of vendors, etc. I will give you a MayDOG button to wear, too! All you'll need to do is answer any questions people might have about MayDOG and take people's raffle tickets and donations. We are selling rubber balls for a suggested donation of $2 each and raffling off a professional pet portrait session. Hi, We're going to be getting together this Sunday evening at 7:30 to put stamps and address labels on more than 500 postcards, which will be going out to all the registered dog owners in Maynard on Monday. We've got a number of people already signed up, but the more the merrier... so let me know if you would like to join us. On Saturday, May 9, MayDOG will be participating in a pet fair in Waltham from 10am to 4pm. Would any of you be available to take a 2-hour shift? Noon to 2 and 2 to 4 are available. This will mainly involve standing/sitting at a table with our brochures, posters, and other materials and answering questions about the group. We're hoping to send out a postcard to every registered dog owner in Maynard before the May 11 postage rate increase. I've had some technical difficulties with my color printer and haven't been able to get the postcards printed myself. Paying for printing is outside of our budget. Do any of you have access to a decent color printer? I can supply the postcard stock. Hi all, Well, the Beacon-Villager has published their articles on the landfill (one discussing the solar farm proposal, and one discussing our proposal). The main article is <a href="http://www.wickedlocal.com/maynard/news/x1931073956/Follow-Up-Waltham-Street-landfill">here</a> (they have not yet published the article about our proposal on their website): They've also published a really uninformed editorial that states, in part: "...we must endorse the idea of building a solar panel power station on the site of the former landfill. That power station would likely preclude using the land as an off-leash dog park." <a href="http://www.wickedlocal.com/maynard/news/x718258826/Opinion-Love-dogs-need-energy">Editorial link</a> Here is what I sent to the Beacon in response: <blockquote> I am writing in response to the Beacon Villager editorial published on 4/16 ("Love dogs, need energy)." There are several problems with this editorial, the most important being that there is no reason that both the park and solar farm can't coexist. Moreover, it is not yet clear that the solar installation is even feasible, given the requirement that nothing can penetrate the cap. I feel that the Beacon is being premature in even stating a position, since there are so many unknowns about the solar proposal. No one has done a site study yet, and the proposal is in the very earliest stages. The solar panels would likely need to be up on the hill, and we're proposing to use the flat part at the base of the hill. The site is 13 acres - there is plenty of room. In short, there is no need to present this as an "either/or" proposition. [MayDOG News] K9-5K cancelled

Unfortunately, we've run into some insurmountable logistical problems, so we are going to have to cancel the K9-5K this year. The original idea was to have the route start and end at the Clocktower Place parking lot on Sudbury Street, but the police wanted $1200 to close off the major roads for the race. We then looked at using the Rockland Woods and making it a trail run, but the Rockland fields were in use for soccer games. So, we're going to a backup plan: participating in the <a href="http://whiskerwalk.org">Whisker Walk</a>. This is a 1-mile fun walk with dogs that will involve a big fair afterward, including many of the kinds of vendors and entertainment we had planned to have. It's a multi-organization fun walk, and each participating group can keep the money they raise. The event will take place on June 7, starting at 11am, at the Lancaster Fairgrounds (home of the Bolton Fair). We're asking a $10 donation per family - <a href="http://www.maydog.org/park/civicr m/event/info?reset=1&id=9">sign up here!</a> I'm disappointed that the K9-5K didn't work out this year, but maybe we can plan for next year. In the meantime, I think the Whisker Walk is a good substitute. For those of you who already signed up for the K9-5K, I will be refunding your money today. We are still going to put on our <a href="http://www.maydog.org/park/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=2">dog behavior workshop</a> on May 3. [MayDOG News] MayDOG walking group

Hi, One of the best ways for dogs to socialize together is to go on "buddy walks". Walking together allows dogs to cooperate on "the hunt" and mimics how their wild ancestors worked together. It's a natural way for shy, fearful, and even reactive dogs to get time with other dogs in a constructive way. Walking together is good for people, too! One of the main benefits of a dog park, as many of you know, is that it builds bonds within the human community. Until we get a dog park, we can build our community in other ways, such as social and educational events. In summary: walking with your dog and other people and their dogs is fun! We're planning on doing regular group walks, starting Saturday, April 11 at 2pm. For the first month, we're going to try out Meetup.com for managing these walks (in order to broaden our exposure a bit). Hi, At our meeting this morning, we divided up flyers for the May 3 workshop and determined who would visit each store/location with them. We discussed the Board of Selectmen meeting and different approaches to building support for our proposal. One person suggested taking the list of registered dog owners and going door to door collecting petition signatures. I am leaning toward sending out a postcard instead - will cost a little more, but will be faster and a lot easier! We also discussed the need for as many of us as possible to write letters to the editor of the Beacon Villager, and I am going to contact the reporter there to discuss a possible story about our work and upcoming events. Regarding the K9-5K, we are hearing that the police detail will be very expensive if we want to close down some of the roads, so I am going to talk to the Conservation Commission about the possibility of doing the run and walk on town conservation land trails over by Rockland Ave. On another note, would any of you be interested in getting together for regular (weekly/bi-weekly) group dog walks? Let me know. Also, we're looking for people who would be willing to record a brief video testimonial about why we need a dog park (see <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRG-uvbf71g">this video</a> for examples). We're pleased to announce our newest Friend of MayDOG: Dirty Hairy's Dogwash in Hudson! I visited there last weekend with my two dogs, and it was great. We don't have a tub, so we previously had to wash our dogs in our shower... not fun! But at Dirty Hairy's self-service dog wash, they have professional tubs (no stooping!) and grooming tables, and you can use all their equipment (shampoos, towels, hairdryers, etc.).
