K9-5K Cancelled
Unfortunately, we've run into some insurmountable logistical problems, so we are going to have to cancel the K9-5K this year. The original idea was to have the route start and end at the Clocktower Place parking lot on Sudbury Street, but the police wanted $1200 to close off the major roads for the race. We then looked at using the Rockland Woods and making it a trail run, but the Rockland fields were in use for soccer games. So, we're going to a backup plan: participating in the Whisker Walk. This is a 1-mile fun walk with dogs that will involve a big fair afterwards, including many of the kinds of vendors and entertainment we had planned to have. It's a multi-organization fun walk, and each participating group can keep the money they raise. The event will take place on June 7, starting at 11am, at the Lancaster Fairgrounds (home of the Bolton Fair). The best thing about the Whisker Walk is that someone else is organizing the whole thing!
I'm disappointed that the K9-5K didn't work out this year, but maybe we can plan for next year. In the meantime, I think the Whisker Walk is a good substitute.
We are still going to put on our dog behavior workshop on May 3. We're also going to be at two additional events in May: the Pet Fair Extravaganza in Waltham on May 9 (a fundraiser for Buddy Dog in Sudbury) and Paws in the Park on May 31 (a fundraiser for Save a Dog in Sudbury). At both events, we'll have a table and information about what we're trying to do here in Maynard. We'll also have the opportunity to sell things--raffle tickets, other merchandise--if we want. Let me know if you have any suggestions on things to sell or if you can help staff the table at either of these events.
More ideas
More thinking has led us to change the name to "K9-5K" - catchier than Dog & Jog. I think Jackalope is right about the entrance fee - we'll probably eliminate that. Looking at route ideas and talking with the Maynard police now.
Lots more planning needed!
Great Idea!
The walk/run is a great idea and a wonderful way to raise awareness and visibility of this initiative. I think the Walk/Run will be a great draw for people. MayDOG might consider trying to post the race on coolrunning.com, a website that lists races. Runners routinely use it as a resource for upcoming races and events. It might be a great way to get the word out to the broader community.
Also, I might lower the "suggested donation" amount to $1 or have it be a free event with donations welcome at the entrance. I think a higher fee will deter many people, especially those who might want to attend with families. However, a lesser amount seems more palpable to people and might make it more likely that people will donate once they are at the event and see all of the great things MayDOG is doing. Just a thought!
walk
The dog walk is great. Jog is also great, but I for one won't join, but say yes to the walk.
Mayfair
Wow! Love the idea!!! This should be a lot of fun and a great way to promote the dog park. We will sign Isis up for the walk. I don't think WE can be ready for the run!!!
